Classical Guitar - Holding and addressing the guitar

Author: Graham Sims Sit at the front edge of the chair.

Straight back.

Trunk facing forward.

Use a footstool or suitable guitar rest.

The guitar has three points of contact against the body.

  • On the lower part of the chest.
  • On top of the left thigh.
  • On the Inner part of the right thigh.

It is essential not to compromise the vibration of the back of the guitar. Don't push the guitar flat against the chest. This will allow longer sustain and better tone production. Moreover, as the guitar is such a directional instrument the correct angle achieved by correct posture adds to the projection (volume) of the instrument.

Shoulders are relaxed.

The nut of the guitar should approximately level with the player's shoulders.
