Jorge Bravo
Jorge Bravo was born in Santiago, Chile in 1973. At the age of fifteen, he began his formal musical training, studying classical guitar with maestro Victor Martinez Parada. His aim was always to train as a flamenco guitarist, and in 1989 he entered a flamenco guitar school and studied there for a period of four years. Since finishing his studies there, he has dedicated himself to developing his own unique style of composition and performance, which demonstrates a wide range of influences from flamenco to jazz and Latin American styles.
From 1995 onwards, Jorge worked in Chile with a wide range of flamenco dance companies as musical director and composer, the most recent of which was “Palo Santo” (2000 – present). With Palo Santo he has put on two highly successful shows: “A Ras de Tierra” (2000), a work that went on tour to Mexico City that same year; and “Memorias del Viento” (2002), which was sponsored by the Chilean government’s prestigious arts foundation “Fondart”. In April 2002, Jorge played as soloist with the Chilean Symphony Orchestra in Manuel da Falla’s work “La Vida Breve”. Jorge has recorded numerous advertising jingles and music for television and theatre.
Primarily a solo concert guitarist and composer, Jorge Bravo has played in a diverse range of venues around Chile; and has been invited every year since its inception to play in the International Guitar Festival held annually in Santiago. Jorge has recorded three cds of his own compositions; “Choni Castillo” (2000), “Sol y Sereno” (2001) which was remastered and recopied in 2003 with the support of the “Fondart”, and “A Ras De Tierra” recorded in 2001 with Palo Santo. Jorge is widely recognised by both his peers and by renowned Chilean musicians as the country’s most talented flamenco guitarist.
For the last 12 years, Jorge has taught flamenco guitar both to private students and, more recently, in the ProJazz music academy in Santiago. Jorge’s students range from beginners to advanced levels, and he teaches technique, composition and the accompaniment of flamenco dance. In Spring 2005, Jorge moved to the UK, to work with European flamenco musicians and continue his teaching career.
Whilst based in London, Jorge was invited to play in a concert in June 2005 in Lahore, Pakistan. Here, he worked alongside celebrated Pakistani musicians and dancers to create a fusion of flamenco and Kathak. In September 2005, “Alma Flamenco” – London’s best known flamenco group – invited Jorge to play in the Royal Albert Hall as part of a fund-raising flamenco gala in which he shared the stage with legendary flamenco stars such as El Cigala and Joaquin Grilo. Jorge performs regularly in venues around London and works both as a soloist and with a diverse range of musicians.
Currently, Jorge is working on two new projects; his third solo flamenco guitar cd and a new cd of compositions more influenced by jazz and South American guitar styles.
In June 2006 Jorge won first prize (category 'Best Guitarist of non-Spanish origin') in the "Primer Concurso Internacional de Guitarra Flamenca Nino Ricardo" held in Murcia, Spain.
